Mobile shelter: the path from a metal plate to a "capsule of life"

As part of Rinat Akhmetov's Steel Front military initiative, Metinvest Group has supplied more than a hundred special mobile shelters for soldiers to the front line. Their production takes place directly at the enterprises of the company.

FIRST STAGE: PROCUREMENT OF STRUCTURE ELEMENTS

The manufacturing process consists of three key stages. At the first stage, the preparation of structural elements takes place: the corrugated plate is rolled to give it a radial shape. This makes the structure more rigid. This stage is impossible to imagine without professional actions of rollers, boiler workers, crane operators and gas cutters.

FACT

Reliable protective structures are made of corrugated steel with a thickness of 2 mm

SECOND STAGE: ASSEMBLY OF THE STRUCTURE OF THE FUTURE MOBILE SHELTER

When the parts of the future reliable shelter are prepared, it is assembled into a one-piece structure like “Lego” by steel structure assemblers, crane operators and electric and gas welders. The shelter gets its shape, but the third final phase of works - painting - gives it its final look.

THIRD STAGE: PAINTING

Metal cleaners prepare a structure for painters, who use a spray gun to apply a layer of paint in a camouflage colour. Thus, underground, where these “capsules of life” will eventually serve, their colour does not matter, but while they are being transported and installed, one more measure to ensure stealth and security would be good.

Production of one shelter requires about 2 tonnes of Metinvest steel. Therefore, one hundred shelters is almost 200 tonnes of metal that turns into real armour underground. A meticulous and much-needed work on one shelter lasts for 165 man-hours.

This shelter is worth every minute spent on its production, because it is the protective module that saves the lives of our soldiers who are fighting for Ukraine bravely and selflessly,

— Oleksander MYRONENKO, Chief Operating Officer of Metinvest Group, is convinced.

The shelter is equipped with a field oven that allows you to keep warm, heat food and dry clothes. The mobile capsule can accommodate six fighters at the same time. Air communications and racks for weapons are also provided there. There is a main and a backup exit to the surface.

Metinvest delivers all shelters to defenders free of charge. The hundredth shelter will save the lives of the soldiers near Bakhmut.

In total, since the beginning of the full-scale war, Metinvest Group has supported the army for more than UAH 1.5 billion. In addition to protective equipment, the company supplies tactical equipment and devices to the front line. Recently, the company sent 50 DJI Mavic 3 Fly More Combo drones, as well as 100 sets of warm winter uniforms, to the State Border Guard Service units.
