Anatolii Bulava, the Golden Star of Northern Iron Ore: a light that cannot be measured in kilowatts

Metinvest takes pride in its specialists, their professionalism, dedication and desire to move forward. This year, the company’s best specialists were honoured on the occasion of the company's 20th anniversary. Among the specialists in Kryvyi Rih, Anatolii Bulava, chief electrician at Crushing Plant No.1 of Northern Iron Ore, was awarded the Metinvest Golden Star.

The light is of particular value at a large industrial enterprise. It does not originate in lamps, substations or electrical networks. It is created by people who, day in, day out, take responsibility for the smooth running of production process and the stability of the power supply. One such person is Anatolii Vasylovych Bulava. Over the course of 32 years of service, he has become not just a highly skilled specialist, but someone who sees production process several steps ahead. For him, any mechanism is a system of possibilities that can be made more efficient, safer and more productive.

When frequency converters were introduced on the conveyors at the third and fourth stages of crushing, it was not merely a technical solution. Behind it lay a desire to find additional capacity for production. The result was measured in figures – increased productivity, economic benefits and operational stability. But the true value of such changes lies in the ability to see the bigger picture where others see only the immediate task at hand.

The same applies to the modernisation of irrigation systems. For some, this is just another production project, but for Anatolii Vasylovych, it is about looking after the people who work alongside him.

"The plant has been operating reliably for many years now without any power-related incidents, and this is despite staff shortages. And, in my view, this is the best testament to Anatolii Vasyloyvych’s professionalism," notes Oleksandr KRYMOV, Head of Crushing Plant No.1 at Northern Iron Ore. "Besides, he has a wealth of experience. Anatolii Vasyloyvych’s work has long extended beyond the chief electrician’s office. He is a technical leader whose activities directly influence productivity, safety and economic performance. He has become the driving force behind numerous investment projects and modernisation initiatives, which generate millions in revenue for the company every year. At the same time, he remains someone who pays close attention to detail and never treats safety as a secondary concern. Nearly a hundred identified risks and dozens of measures implemented – these are not just statistics, but the result of daily efforts to ensure that every employee returns home safe and sound."

“I love this work and I know my stuff,” says Anatolii BULAVA. “After all, this is my 33rd year at the plant, in the same role, having joined in 1993 as an electrical fitter. Over the years, managers have invited me to work at newer plants, but I’ve become so attached to CP-1 that I didn’t want to go anywhere else. I’ve worked as an electrician on duty for 11 years – ask me at night what needs doing, and I’ll tell you."

His colleagues speak of him as someone you can rely on in any circumstances. Anatolii Vasylovych’s authority is unquestionable and is based on his knowledge, experience and ability to take responsibility for the outcome.

It is worth noting that the company’s highest honour – the Metinvest Golden Star – was established in 2014 to recognise employees who, through their work, are changing the company for the better. It is presented every summer – on the occasion of Metinvest’s anniversary or on the eve of Metallurgists’ and Miners’ Day.
