Metinvest's mining and processing plants regularly conduct first aid training. During the war, this is the second major course, which will involve more than 500 miners and employees of Metinvest Promservice.
The safety of employees' lives and health is a priority for Metinvest, and with the outbreak of the full-scale war, the threat of shelling and destruction has been added to the production risks. Therefore, groups of employees have been formed at Kryvyi Rih's enterprises to monitor the situation in the subdivisions and, if necessary, to provide first aid to colleagues. The second training course is for new participants and aims to increase the number of employees in the workshops who will be ready to respond properly in the event of an emergency.
The training is conducted by certified trainers from the Ukrainian Red Cross Society with extensive practical experience. Metinvest employees learn theory and practice practical skills in small groups to better absorb what they have learned.
"Our training programmes consist of separate modules and include 60% of the time for practical skills training," said Olena OKHRIMNKO, a trainer at the Ukrainian Red Cross Society. "We start with the first aid algorithm. In the theoretical part, we explain how our body behaves in a particular crisis situation. We demonstrate and simulate different situations and work on skills and abilities to restore the position of the victim, stabilise him or her; how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, act correctly in case of bleeding, various wounds and injuries, fractures, and burns, as well as in case of other emergencies, such as heart attack, stroke, acute abdominal pain, etc. Upon completion of the course, a person can confidently provide first aid using improvised means, correctly and in full, to save the life and health of the victim until rescuers or doctors arrive. They are also able to protect themselves legally."
Upon completion of the course, each participant will receive a certificate valid for three years and recognised in more than 190 countries.
"Working in a high-risk environment requires confident first aid skills, so I eagerly took the training. And I have no regrets! If my knowledge before was mostly theoretical, now it has been deepened with purely practical first aid skills. The rules for restoring the position, stabilising, and transporting the victim were new to me. It was useful to practice the skills of stopping bleeding with various means. We worked on everything with colleagues in pairs. The trainers helped us to learn the necessary information," shared his impressions Oleksandr RAKUTA, an instructor driver of the locomotive crews of the Railway Shop at Northern GOK.
"I gained useful experience. The ability to provide first aid before doctors or rescuers arrive and to react quickly and correctly in a critical situation is important in life in general, and even more so during a war. We devoted a lot of time to algorithms for providing assistance: in what order and with what speed, what to do, what is a priority. Much attention was paid to stopping bleeding, different types of body wounds, and transporting victims. It was very informative and a lot of practice, so I think I have consolidated my skills firmly and for a long time, I won't get lost in case of emergency," said Hennadii DЕMCHNKO, acting head of the motor vehicle convoy of Auto Transport Shop at InGOK.
In 2022, more than 2,000 Metinvest employees from Kryvyi Rih, Zaporizhzhia, Kamianske, Pokrovsk and Avdiivka received first aid training. This year, the company plans to train more than 1,700 employees. Upon completion of the course, each participant will receive a certificate valid for three years and recognised in more than 190 countries.
