Metallurgy is not only a sector of the economy but also a force that shapes the city's visual character. Recently, the exhibition "Voices of the City" opened at Zaporizhzhia BIRUCHIY art center, the result of an art residency of the same name during which artists from different cities of Ukraine and Poland explored Zaporizhzhia's industrial identity. The artists explored the architecture, historic districts and industrial landscapes of the city, spoke with historians and architects, and discovered another side of its industrial heritage. An important role in creating the exhibition was played by Zaporizhstal, which inspired the artists and provided rolled steel and slag of metallurgical production for their works. These industrial materials became part of contemporary art, helping the artists tell the story of the city from a fresh perspective. On the night of 11 August, Oleksii Zavhorodnii, an employee of Zaporizhstal, was repairing blast furnace equipment together with his colleagues when the plant came under a russian attack. Oleksii was unable to reach a shelter and suffered severe injuries. His colleagues pulled him from the rubble and provided first aid. The rescuers who arrived at the scene promptly transported Oleksii to hospital. Doctors fought for his life for three days. Colleagues came to the hospital, waited for news, and held on to the hope that Oleksii, a strong and resilient man, would overcome the consequences of the devastating attack. But on 14 August, Oleksii passed away. He never regained consciousness. He was only 51 years old. More than three decades of dedicated service Oleksii devoted his entire working life to the industrial sector. Metinvest Consolidated Iron Ore, in partnership with Kryvyi Rih Future Foundation NGO and Petrivska Settlement Council, continues to implement infrastructure projects for the benefit of community residents and their children. Repair works are currently underway at one of the community’s pre-school education institutions. Last year, under the cooperation memorandum, Metinvest provided funding for the purchase of construction materials and equipment to establish a basic shelter, as well as for roof repairs at a kindergarten in one of the villages of Petrivska community.
