The operation of a steelworks depends on reliable electrical equipment. For 93 years, this reliability has been ensured by Zaporizhstal’s Electrical Equipment Shop for Steelmaking Operations.
Every day, its specialists carry out maintenance, routine repairs and major overhauls of equipment on which the stability of production processes in virtually all of the plant’s business units depends.
In addition, the specialists are responsible for ensuring the reliable operation of air conditioning units, refrigeration equipment, drinking water purification systems, sparkling water dispensers, and other power-related equipment across the plant. The professionals of the Electrical Equipment Shop for Steelmaking Operations begin servicing this equipment long before the onset of the summer heat, ensuring that in the plant’s hot production shops, air conditioning and cooling systems perform their primary function of providing comfortable and safe working conditions.
Today, the Electrical Equipment Repair Shop for Steelmaking Operations employs 140 specialists. Seven employees are currently serving in the ranks of Ukraine’s Defence Forces, while the memory of another seven colleagues who lost their lives while fulfilling their military duty will forever remain part of the department’s history.
Last year, the team repaired 468 electrical machines and carried out 113 major overhauls of electrical equipment. In the first half of 2026 alone, the specialists had already restored 257 electrical machines and completed 33 major overhauls.
According to Volodymyr Miroshnychenko, Head of the Electrical Equipment Shop for Steelmaking Operations, despite the challenging conditions of wartime, the department continues to carry out repairs of equipment on which the stable operation of the plant depends.
“Over the past two years, the team has delivered a number of important repair projects. These include the major overhaul of Turbo Generator No. 1 at the CHP Plant, the relocation of Charging Machine No. 5 in the Open-Hearth Shop, the emergency manufacture and installation of the main hoisting panel for the Open-Hearth Shop charging machine, the repair of large electric motors for pumping equipment at Pumping Station No. 2 of the Water Supply Shop, as well as work carried out on equipment in the Central Garage of the Rolling Production and in the Blast Furnace and Coke Production Shops. Each of these projects contributes to the reliability of the production process and the stable operation of the plant,” said Volodymyr MIROSHNYCHENKO.
People remain the department’s greatest asset. The longest-serving employee in the shop is Yuri Mohylat, Head of Section No. 1, who has been working there for 40 years.
The department also takes pride in its family dynasties. The Mohylat family has dedicated a combined 134 years of service to the department, while the Levchenko dynasty’s total length of service stands at 89 years. Such families help ensure continuity between generations and pass on their professional knowledge and experience to younger employees.
The department also employs young professionals. One of them is electrician Serhii Mishchenko, who has already demonstrated his potential. In just six months of service, he has established himself as a responsible specialist, working alongside experienced colleagues during the major overhauls of DC motors in the Open-Hearth Shop and large electrical machines at the Hot Rolling Shop and the Water Supply Shop, helping to ensure high-quality equipment restoration and reduce repair times.
On the occasion of the shop’s anniversary, the Head of the department extended special thanks to employees who exemplify professionalism, responsibility, and dedication to their work. Among them are electrical fitters for the repair and maintenance of electrical equipment Hryhorii Leshchenko, Dmytro Tatarinov, Artur Zhukov, Andrii Utenkov, Mykola Starostiak, Serhii Solianyk and Viacheslav Saiko; electrical fitter for the repair of windings and insulation of electrical equipment Inna Klymenko; as well as maintenance fitters Serhii Sarana and Ihor Fedorchenko.
“The team in our shop is made up of professionals united by responsibility, expertise and dedication to their work. It is thanks to their daily efforts that the reliable operation of the plant’s electrical equipment is ensured. I would like to sincerely thank every employee for their conscientious work, sense of responsibility and support for one another.
