Building Kametstal's future: The key to success lies in a professional team

In today’s rapidly evolving world, where new technologies are being rapidly adopted across all industrial sectors, major steel producers like Kametstal face the constant challenge of modernising their operations. The collaborative efforts of the Capital Construction and Investment Directorate are the driving force behind these developments and technical upgrades. On 11 August, they celebrate their professional holiday, Ukraine’s Builder’s Day.

This team of specialists is responsible for the development and implementation of investment projects, overseeing construction, and ensuring the quality of completed work. Their duties include planning and budgeting for each project, obtaining the necessary permits, passing inspections, coordinating with contractors, and approving estimates and documentation. Step by step, these professionals are modernising and shaping the future of our enterprise.  In this multifaceted process, everyone understands their role and the importance of their contribution to the overall success.

Even in the challenging conditions of wartime, Kametstal continues to upgrade its production capacities and technologies. Over the past 12 months, nearly 80 investment projects have been implemented. Each project presented its own challenges, which the dedicated team approached with enthusiasm and determination. As a result, the capital investment programme has been successfully executed in full.

According to Oleksii Tokii, Director of Capital Construction and Investment, the investment programme for 2023-2024 is primarily focused on ensuring stable production and reliable energy supplies.

Among the successful projects is the replacement of the No. 4 coal-loading wagon for Coke Battery No.5, aimed at increasing equipment reliability and minimising risks of reduced coke production. Another significant achievement was the early completion of the modernisation of the first three streams of CCM-2, including the replacement of the drive frequency converters. Currently, a contract is being finalized to extend this project to the remaining three streams with the introduction of a new control system. Additionally, the reconstruction of the benzene unit building has been completed as part of a broader initiative to restore the plant’s facilities.

Considerable efforts have also been directed towards enhancing the plant's power supply reliability. Over the past year, 11 projects aimed at improving the plant’s electrical safety have been completed, including the replacement and modernisation of cable lines, substations, and high-voltage switches powering key metallurgical units. This remains a priority, with three more electrical safety projects currently underway in the blast furnace and coke production shops.

Work is also being done to upgrade the plant’s technological infrastructure. A new water pipeline system is currently under construction to improve the reliability of water supply to the converter shop and reduce water loss.

“In these turbulent times, circumstances are changing rapidly, and new challenges continue to emerge in the steelmaking industry. This requires quick responses and, at times, the need to develop multiple solutions to the same problem. Our well-coordinated team excels at this because the foundation of our success lies in the strong relationships within the team. These are true professionals who are not afraid of tough challenges and always strive for excellence. I want to express my sincere gratitude to every member of the Capital Construction and Investment Directorate, and I congratulate our hardworking team and all builders involved in our efforts on this professional holiday. I wish you inspiration to tackle new challenges, good health, and peace for you and your families. We are building strong foundations, working steadily, and confidently moving towards a peaceful and bright future for Ukraine!”, stated Oleksii TOKII, Director of Capital Construction and Investment at Kametstal.
