Every year, employees of Metinvest's Zaporizhzhia enterprises help to replenish donor blood stock for medical institutions in Zaporizhzhia.
Assistance through blood donation has long been part of the corporate culture for steelmakers. They donate blood both during organized trips and individually – whenever their work schedule and health condition allows. Such constancy provides tangible support for medical institutions in the region.
Recently, 25 employees of the plant joined the campaign. In total, they donated over 11 liters of blood. At the same time, the participation of Zaporizhstal employees in the blood donor movement is not limited to one day. According to the Zaporizhzhia Regional Blood Service Centre, in February alone, around 80 employees of the plant visited the medical facility to donate blood to save lives.
"I became a donor after the start of the full-scale invasion. Today is the my 15th donation, you could call it a small anniversary," says Andrii ZUBKOVSKYI, a foreman at the Cold Rolling Shop. "I know that many people are afraid of donation, but in fact it's all very simple and there is nothing to worry about: you come, have your haemoglobin checked, see a primary care doctor, have breakfast and actually donate blood. And you understand that you save someone's life with this simple action. It's worth all the effort.
Employees of Zaporozhogneupor also join the donations, supporting the initiative of colleagues and participating in joint campaigns. Oleksandr BORYSOV, a press operator at Zaporozhogneupor, is donating for the first time. However, he admits: he isn’t nervous.
"I have many friends and acquaintances who are defending Ukraine on the front line. My brother suffered a very serious injury in the war, with an amputation of a limb – so I clearly understand just how important it is to provide hospitals with blood and blood products to save the lives of civilians and defenders. That's why I joined in without hesitation to do a good deed. I’ll be taking part in such campaigns more often now,” says the employee of Zaporozhogneupor.
The blood service center emphasizes that the need for donors remains consistently high – both for those wounded in combat and for patients with serious illnesses. Blood groups 1 and 2 are in the greatest demand, but stocks of other groups also need to be constantly replenished.
"Unfortunately, a lot of people need blood transfusions every day. We are grateful to the employees of Zaporizhstal and other Metinvest enterprises, as well as the city’s residents, who are joining the blood donor movement. And we appeal to those who have not yet become a donor, but can be, – please come to the blood service centre," said Yuliia VORONA, acting head of the donor recruitment and medical examination department at the Zaporizhzhia Regional Blood Service Centre.
