Zaporizhstal Сontinuing to Provide Ukrainian Hospitals with Free Medical Oxygen

In 2023, the steelworks donated 767 tons of oxygen to hospitals.

Zaporizhstal Iron and Steel Works produces medical oxygen using its ASU-60 (Air Separation Unit) in the oxygen compressor shop: here, atmospheric air is purified, compressed and separated into components. Zaporizhstal's oxygen has been certified by Ukraine's Ministry of Health for use as a medicine since 2021. The steelworks has already donated almost 6,500 tons of oxygen to more than 100 hospitals in 17 Ukrainian regions since the project started.

Amid the full-scale war in Ukraine, the volumes and geography of oxygen supplies have decreased noticeably but they have not stopped. On average, Zaporizhstal supplied 64 tons of oxygen per month at the request of hospitals in 2023. In total, 767 tons of medical oxygen were supplied to hospitals in 2023.

The largest consumers of Zaporizhstal's oxygen in 2023 were Zaporizhzhia city hospitals, the clinical hospital of emergency and ambulance care, the children's hospital, and other.

It should be noted that medical oxygen is intended for oxygen therapy in conditions accompanied by oxygen deficiency such as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, surgical operations, and so on. In particular, oxygen therapy is used to treat the acute respiratory disease COVID-19 caused by the SARSr-CoV coronavirus. During treatment, one ton of oxygen covers the needs of about a hundred patients.
