Metinvest Polytechnic's students who receive education under the "Surface Mining" bachelor's programme organised a field session at Metinvest Central Iron Ore and Northern Iron Ore in Kryvyi Rih. During the week, they studied the mining and processing of iron ore and gained a better understanding of the actual working conditions at the enterprise.
The educational programme of the field session included workshops, practical classes, and training sessions led by the enterprise's specialists. In total, the session covered 40 hours of practice. This allowed students to gain firsthand experience. The future specialists studied transportation processes, the initial processing of ore, and learned about the technological chains involved in solid mineral surface mining.
Majority of the students have already practical experience of working at Metinvest Group's enterprises holding positions of engineers and qualified employees. The field session was an opportunity for them to combine this experience with new knowledge gained from leading industry experts. Ihor Hryhoriev and Serhii Lutsenko, lecturers of the Mining Department, who accompanied the students during the session, conducted classes and provided consultations, helping the participants to better understand the specifics of production processes.
The students were particularly impressed by the excursion to the Hannivskyi open pit at Northern Iron Ore. Here they saw modern equipment for the extraction and transportation of minerals: giant excavators, powerful dump trucks, drilling rigs, drilling equipment. Student Svitlana CHERVIATIUK shared her impressions: This is an unforgettable experience. In our textbooks, we've only seen equipment through photos and diagrams. But here, it's right in front of us. We can see how it actually works and truly appreciate the knowledge and skills we're gaining at the university. The day culminated with a massive explosion at the quarry, which allowed us to feel the scale and power of mining operations at the enterprise, which has high-quality ore reserves for decades to come.
Viacheslav KAMENETS, Associate Professor of Mining at Metinvest Polytechnic, commenting on the importance of the field sessions, said: "Training at operating facilities in the mining and processing industry is an extremely important element of professional training. It allows students to develop critical thinking and the ability to respond quickly to production challenges, which are essential skills in the challenging environment of modern mining. Such an investment in the future is not only an increase in the competitiveness of Metinvest Polytechnic, but also a significant contribution to the development of the mining and processing industry in Ukraine."
This format of education allows Metinvest Polytechnic students to apply the theoretical knowledge gained at the university in real life conditions, which significantly improves the quality of their training.
