Kamet Steel steelmaking production workers update the equipment of Basic Oxygen Furnace No. 2

The complex of major overhauls of Kamet Steel Basic Oxygen Furnace Shop’s main equipment has entered the next stage – the planned renewal of key equipment has begun at Basic Oxygen Furnace No. 2.

One of the most important major overhaul works is the replacement of the special gearbox wheel of the basic oxygen furnace drive. The gear wheel is a key mechanism in the tilt/turn process of the basic oxygen furnace.

A thorough inspection and revision of the components and parts of the special gearbox revealed significant wear of the old wheel during long-term operation. The new giant replacement part was manufactured at Novokramatorsk Machine-Building Plant.

Now specialists are dismantling the old wheel, and the new one is already on the repair site and is ready to be replaced.

The key tasks of the major overhaul include the restoration of six mounted drive gearboxes. This wide range of tasks, which includes revision and maintenance of bearing units, machining and replacement of lubricants, etc., is performed by specialists of the metallurgical equipment repair shop.

Repair interventions are also planned on the vertical path of bulk materials. Electrical repair personnel were tasked with updating significant volumes of cable and wire lines. Comprehensive measures to restore and maintain the operability of teeming ladle cars, slag cars and other infrastructure facilities of the second basic oxygen furnace are carried out in accordance with the overhaul schedule.

Andrii ZUIEV, Deputy Head of the BOF Shop for Engineering, commented:

"The uniqueness of the current major overhaul is that we perform all work on Basic Oxygen Furnace No. 2 with the preservation of the refractory lining, which has not yet worked out its term. For this purpose, we have developed and implement a number of technical solutions in combination with special work schedules. Our primary task is to increase the reliability of the key equipment of the basic oxygen furnace, on which the stability of the entire technological process of steel smelting largely depends."
