Employees of Integrated Iron Ore receive training on railway safety

Teachers from Metinvest Polytechnic Technical University conducted training for line managers at Northern Iron Ore and Central Iron Ore. The training aimed to enhance knowledge about risks and potential emergency situations during railway transport operations.

During the session, professionals discussed cases from their workplaces, safe work practices for railway transport, completed written exercises, and participated in video assignments.

"The training covers a wide range of topics – from general information on behaviour at railway facilities and rules for technical operation to the use of tools that minimise employees' exposure to hazardous zones," said Serhii ZAMULA, a teacher at Metinvest Polytechnic and a training coach. "We focused on safe practices for work on railway tracks and explored technical measures to prevent injuries.

The significance of the training lies in the fact that it consolidates expertise from various production facilities. Each training session involves sharing experience among employees with knowledge, expertise, and practical skills related to railway transport. Together, we work towards our main goal: honing the safest work methods related to railway transport, improving industrial safety knowledge, and motivating employees to adopt the best practices from Metinvest's facilities.

All of this is aimed at minimising the number of injuries to employees working on the railway and handling railway transport."

"I've been working for over twenty years, but I still learned a lot of useful details about railway safety," commented Vitalii KIRNICH, acting head of rolling stock at the Railway Transport Department of Northern Iron Ore. "I liked the trainer's presentation style: everything was clear and illustrative. Among the best practices from the company’s facilities presented to us, I took several on board for implementation at our site. For instance, improving track routes with fills or placing wooden sleepers to raise the tracks to the rail head level will optimise movement and enhance safety. Using special devices – universal forks, hooks, and others – for cleaning and laying brake shoes will speed up the work and make it safer for workers. We’ve already partially implemented the improvement of visibility for rolling stock by replacing incandescent lamps in buffer lights. I learned a lot of useful insights: there’s much to implement on the shop floor and share with colleagues and those under my supervision.

Each participant was given a workbook, where they could note down key points during the training to use as a working assistant – structured "crib notes" summarizing the main points of the training.

Metinvest Polytechnic's experts conduct railway safety training across all company facilities. Overall, 30 employees of mining and processing plants took part in training sessions in Kryvyi Rih.
