Metinvest Group’s IT company, Metinvest Digital, has developed an AI tool that helps to control product quality at Zaporizhstal. A recent article by Forbes Ukraine explored how the Group is saving money with this solution and why scaling it to 11 other plants might be challenging.Speaking at the ForbesTech 2024 conference in November, Maksym Balanyuk, head of the R&D centre at Metinvest Digital, announced that the Metinvest mining and steel group has implemented an AI solution for production quality control, which is projected to save the Group US$250,000 annually.The AI identifies defects during the production of slabs, a semi-finished steel product used to manufacture sheet metal. These slabs are produced at Zaporizhstal, and the working name of the solution is ForgeCheck.Zaporizhstal is one of Ukraine’s largest producers of pig iron and rolled products. Just before the start of 2025, Kamet Steel's power and utility staff successfully restarted plant's main air separation unit following its major overhaul. Lasting 50 days, the major overhaul of the AKAr-40/35 was one of the largest completed at the plant under the 2024 programme.After completing the planned repair work, specialists began preparatory pre-start activities as early as mid-December. They perform high-temperature regeneration of the adsorbent after its complete replacement. As part of the major overhaul, 68 tonnes of zeolite and 33.6 tonnes of aluminium oxide – highly dispersed materials used to remove moisture and carbon dioxide, which adversely affect the performance and quality of air separation – were loaded into the cleaned and repaired air purification vessels.All major overhaul tasks were successfully accomplished. This year, comprehensive trainings on responding to emergency situations in wartime continue in the shops of the plant. Recently, the regulations of actions were worked out in the sinter shop.As before, during a comprehensive training in the workshop, an emergency situation was recreated after an imaginary shelling. According to the scenario, the sinter shop had been hit by a UAV. As a result, the gas pipeline were damaged, followed by a leak of toxic substances and poisoning of the operator. Also, according to the legend, there was a fire on the premises of the shop and a suspicious object was found.Employees not only of the shop, but of the entire enterprise, had to effectively interact with each other on the issues of safe shutdown of equipment due to lack of power supply. At the local level, first aid units were practising skills to save the life of the victim, firefighting units were extinguishing the fire. As part of Rinat Akhmetov’s Steel Front defence initiative, Metinvest Group has manufactured and assembled armoured protection for the control module of the MIM-104 Patriot system, which safeguards Ukraine’s skies from enemy attacks. Engineers from Metinvest have already mounted the first armour on an operational air defence control module.Metinvest continues to actively expand the range of protective products it makes for Ukraine’s army, enhancing safety and protecting military equipment and the lives of defenders.
