Science that modernizes production: international awards of Metinvest Polytechnic students

Students of Metinvest Polytechnic have received international recognition for their engineering solutions aimed at modernizing industry, improving energy efficiency and developing digital technologies in production. Young scientists of the university became prize-winners and received awards of the international competition of student research papers "Black Sea Science".

Mykhailo Voronin

The jury of the competition included 162 scientists, of which 85 were representatives of 26 foreign countries, including the USA, Canada, Great Britain, Germany, Spain, China, Poland, Latvia and other countries. 455 scientific papers from participants of Ukrainian and foreign higher education institutions were submitted to the first stage of the competition, which emphasizes the high level of international competition and the prestige of the award.

Among the winners of the competition is a student of Metinvest Polytechnic Mykhailo Voronin, who combines education in electrical engineering and work at Kamet Steel. For the competition, he presented a project for the modernization of electric drives of drilling rigs for the conditions of the Kryvyi Rih basin. His bronze-winning project focuses on developing an energy-efficient drive for the drilling tool feed mechanism in open-pit drilling rigs – a solution that can significantly improve the efficiency of mining equipment. As part of the research, the student proposed an approach that allows you to reduce electricity consumption, increase the accuracy of drilling tool feeding, and reduce the load on equipment.

To test the effectiveness of the solution, the author created a digital twin of the system in the MATLAB/Simulink environment and simulated the operation of the drive in different production modes. The results of the study confirmed that the introduction of adjustable electric drives in drilling rigs allows to increase the service life of hydraulic and mechanical components, reduce maintenance and repair costs and improve the performance of the drilling process.

Anton Podobnyi

The certificate of the international competition was also awarded to the student-environmental engineer Anton Podobnyi. In his competitive paper, he presented a specialized digital tool "Battery Cyclone Calculator" for modelling and selecting gas cleaning equipment in metallurgical production. The project demonstrates the results of modelling the choice of a gas cleaning plant using a blast furnace burden supply unit as an example, where dust is characterized by high abrasiveness and polydispersion. The developed software is based on an iterative algorithm for automatic selection of the type of cyclone, taking into account the parameters of operation and the required level of cleaning of the dust and gas flow.

The solution allows you to optimize the selection of equipment for the treatment of industrial emissions and is an example of the use of digital tools to solve real engineering problems.

"Participation in international competitions and similar events stimulates professional development, inspires the search and implementation of new ideas. In particular, we are talking about the use of digital tools to solve engineering problems. This is one of my first attempts to work in this area, but not my first experience of participating in similar events at various levels. In the future, I want to develop and implement other ideas," said Anton PODOBNYI

Metinvest Polytechnic emphasizes that students' participation in international scientific competitions is an important component of modern engineering education. The university focuses on practice-oriented learning, where students work on real production challenges – from automation and energy efficiency to digitalization and environmental safety of industrial processes.

It is such projects that form a new generation of engineers capable of creating solutions for the modernization of Ukrainian industry and its technological development.
