Amid martial law, Kamet Steel's axle rolling mill continues to operate and meet production targets for the production of axles for domestic customers. Last year, the company produced and shipped over 3,500 tonnes of railcar axles.
Promising plans to increase the production at this unique equipment were disrupted by Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. Now, the steelworks' professionals are using alternative ways to source steel billets for axle production, which used to come from Azovstal.
Serhii MISHURIN, deputy rolling shop manager for axle and ball rolling areas:
"At the end of March, we completed this year's first stage of the programme to produce axles for our customers. We made more than 1,600 tonnes of this product for the domestic railcar and open car manufacturing, for the Ukrainian railways. This profitable product is important for the efficient operation of our enterprise and is also necessary for the renewal of the Ukrainian railway fleet."
As a reminder, Kamet Steel's axle rolling mill is the only mill in the world that produces axles by cross-helical rolling. Before the war, the axles produced by Kamet Steel were supplied to customers in Ukraine, Europe and North America.
