An overhauled 2ТE10M twin-unit mainline diesel locomotive returned to Northern Iron Ore after its major overhaul. The locomotive is back in service carrying rock mass in Pershotravnevyi quarry.
Over a span of more than three years, the locomotive was at the Daugavpils Locomotive Repair Plant undergoing a major overhaul. All key components and assemblies of the two units (No. 98-99) were restored to the nameplate specifications. The performance parameters and lifespan of all components were restored, extending the service life of the locomotive by another six years. To ensure its reliable operation, the functionality of the main and auxiliary equipment, including the main diesel generator, traction electric motors, two-unit assembly, and small power electric motors, was restored. Mechanical and electrical equipment, including the turbine compressors, radiator compartment, compressor, and instruments, underwent repairs. The running gear, including the body, main frame with an automatic coupler, and bogies with wheelsets, was also repaired.
The repaired locomotive was tested in rock mass haulage and now carries 1.1 thousand tonnes of ore per trip.
The drivers note that after the repair, the equipment effectively performs all its functions. Conditions for the crew have also been improved. New shock-absorbing seats were installed in the cab, along with new LED lights for safety. New air conditioners ensure comfort for employees.
"Amid the many restrictions and challenges brought by the war, maintaining equipment performance remains one of the company's priorities. As business plan targets grow, this becomes especially important. The plant continues to improve its rolling stock to ensure the reliability and efficiency of the rock mass transportation process. The company's enterprises have been cooperating with Latvian repair contractors since 2017 and continue to so do due to the high quality of their work," said Volodymyr NAZARENKO, head of Northern Iron Ore's Railway Department.
Overall, Northern Iron Ore allocated UAH 122 million for major overhauls of railway equipment in 2024.
