Metinvest Plans to Expand Its Product Portfolio with DR Pellets for Green Steel and Premium Feedstock for Hot Metal Production

Metinvest is launching a large-scale programme to increase the output of DR pellets for green steelmaking using direct iron reduction technology and premium feedstock for hot metal production.

The programme envisages:

◾ Construction of a flotation facility to produce concentrate that meets quality requirements for DR-grade pellet feedstock;

◾ Revamping of the existing LURGI 552-A pelletising plant.

On 1 December 2025, Metinvest Sichsteel, a Group company responsible for implementing its strategic investment projects, entered into a Basic Engineering contract with leading Austrian company Primetals Technologies for the revamping of the LURGI 552-A pelletising plant. This will become the first stage of modernisation of the induration machine, scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.

The global shift toward green metallurgy, the development of EAF steelmaking, and changes in consumption in China and the EU are driving demand for high-quality iron ore raw materials (IORM). To boost its competitiveness in global IORM markets, Metinvest intends to improve the quality of its concentrate.

"Northern Iron Ore's concentrate has strong potential for quality improvement. Following additional beneficiation using the flotation technology, we will be able to obtain a product with an iron content of at least 70% and minimal impurity levels − silicon and aluminium oxides not exceeding 2%. This makes it possible to produce high‑quality pellets", said Serhii PAVLYSH, deputy programmes director at Metinvest Sichsteel.

To enter the high-margin DR pellet market, aside from additional beneficiation of standard quality concentrate, Metinvest plans to revamp the LURGI 552-A pelletising plant. This will enable the production of pellets with improved properties that meet customer requirements and market trends.

Following the implementation of the programme, which consists of these two projects, Northern Iron Ore is expected to produce around 4.0 mln t of DR pellets per year, with the flexibility to produce BF HQ pellets as well.

"At the design stage, modern energy saving technologies will be incorporated. And the new process control system will allow the line to be reset to produce either type of pellets," said Andrii PANCHENKO, project manager.
