Metinvest’s Steel Dream recognised by the UN Global Compact in Ukraine

Kyiv hosted the Partnership for Sustainability Award 2024 organised by the UN Global Compact in Ukraine. Metinvest Group’s project Steel Dream became a finalist in the Prosperity category.

Partnership for Sustainability is an annual international campaign where the UN Global Compact in Ukraine honours the best projects implemented through partnership between businesses, government, and civil society to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

This year, the competition recognised projects from Ukraine and across Europe, which aim to support Ukraine during the full-scale invasion, as well as promote other best practices in sustainable development that could become a model for future recovery.

FACTS

There were five award categories: Peace (Warriors of Light), Planet, Prosperity, People, and Digitalisation.

Metinvest Group’s entry was Steel Dream project, which was shortlisted in the Prosperity category. All the projects recognised in this category are aimed at rebuilding destroyed infrastructure, overcoming the economic consequences of war, and combating corruption.

An unbreakable dream

Steel Dream is a universal concept for rebuilding Ukraine developed by Metinvest experts. It includes a set of turnkey solutions for construction of housing and social infrastructure from steel, which can be adapted to the specific needs of individual communities. The concept stands out for its inclusiveness, eco-friendliness, and speed of construction: a one-storey house can be built in 2 months, an eight-storey building in 9 months, a kindergarten twice as fast as its regular construction time. Ukrainian architects, designers, and project planners are part of the initiative.

FIGURES

This initiative features over 200 pre-designed building projects, each utilising three key prefabricated steel components – frames, modules and platforms.

Currently, Steel Dream is being presented to the target communities in affected regions. Local authorities are already being offered a complete package of documents, including cost estimates, construction schedules, layouts, and technical solutions. A community can choose a design for a residential building, school, or other structure, adapt it to their needs, secure state or international funding, and immediately begin construction.

Steel Dream has already received positive feedback from communities, proving its relevance to urgent recovery needs. In particular, projects have been developed free of charge for Mariupol, Bakhmut, and Baryshivka village. The concepts have made it through public discussions, and work is underway to engage partners for future reconstruction. Additionally, the project is being adapted for Trostianets city and Hlukhiv village. In total, more than 30 applications have been received from communities across Ukraine.
