From metallurgist to defender: the story of a Zaporizhzhia resident who joined the defence of the country

Volodymyr, a metallurgist from Zaporizhstal, volunteered to join the Territorial Defence Forces and spoke about his motivation for fighting. War fundamentally changes people's lives, divides them into "before" and "after", and teaches them to live anew – with new values, goals, desires and dreams. Prior to the full-scale invasion, Volodymyr worked in the Quality Control Department of Zaporizhstal. Since 2013, the man has been working as a controller (supervisor), and later, after being promoted, he became a foreman. With the outbreak of a full-scale war in February 2022, the man continued to work at Zaporizhstal, supporting the country's economy in times of uncertainty and crisis together with the enterprise's staff. The metallurgist helped volunteers and citizens, in particular, in strengthening the civil infrastructure, and later felt that he had to be at the military front – among his fellow defenders. – In the autumn of 2022, I became a volunteer fighter and joined the Territorial

The Museum of the History of the City of Kyiv has launched the VOICES exhibition, which opened the multimedia space of the Museum of Civilian Voices by the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation with an art installation by GOGOLFEST.The exhibition will be open to visitors from 23 February to 26 April 2024 at the Museum of the History of the City of Kyiv at 7, Bohdana Khmelnytskoho Street."One of the tasks we tried to implement was to find ways to comment on the events of the war, to respond to them, to engage the countries of the world in dialogue. The three installations here form a triptych dedicated to the loss of home and the question of where home is. Is home the walls? Is it loved ones? Is it us? The first installation is City. A ruined city. A city of memory. A city of empty houses. The second one consists of suitcases – the Pillar of Destroyed Life, among which there are artifacts of the Museum. The third is the Refugees wall, where each figure hides an emotion, a story of a person who lef

Two life-changing years: experience of Ivan Firsov, a war veteran from InGOK

In a conversation with Ivan Firsov, a war veteran and employee of Metinvest's Ingulets GOK, about how at the age of 28 he went through the hell, was wounded and concussed, and returned to civilian life as a changed man. The first conclusion Ivan came to when he was on the "zero line" was that he had no problems at all before the war. Since 2015, the young man had been working as a leading engineer in the reliability department at InGOK. On that ominous morning of the 24th of February, he was going to work as usual, but after the first rocket explosions, the fear that had kept the whole country on edge in recent days was unfortunately confirmed. A month after the full-scale war began, the man was called to the military commissariat for the first time, and six months later he was mobilised. That was the beginning of his service. "I was trained at the general military training area in Cherkasky, and got my first combat experience in Kherson region. At that time, our soldiers were driving

'A step into a new future': marine Denys Kovtykha gets an apartment from The Heart of Azovstal

Marine Denys Kovtykha became a participant in The Heart of Azovstal, a programme of Rinat Akhmetov's Steel Front defence initiative. It purchased an apartment in Odesa for the defender. The 23-year-old defender sustained a major head injury during the fighting near Mariupol - a skull fracture with displacement. It took over a week to get him to hospital. Eventually, he was evacuated to Dnipro. This was followed by a long treatment and difficult rehabilitation, successful and unsuccessful surgeries. The doctors were apprehensive about taking on such a hard case. For months, the defender's mother travelled with her son to hospitals and clinics in Ukraine. Eventually, the family found a specialist in Odesa who agreed to re-install the titanium implant and restore Denys's appearance.Despite his first-degree disability, he remains the main breadwinner in the family. He has a mother and two younger brothers. Now Denys wants to study law to provide legal assistance to his fellow soldiers."Sin

"I had no doubts – I made the right choice", Nataliia Sheihus

When one mentions "metallurgy", imagination conjures up large plant units that exhale fire and steam, towering tens of metres above the ground, propping up the sky, and strong men working there, as if they were destined to do this, because not everyone is cut out for this job. In real life, men indeed dominate steelmaking teams, but it is not absolute domination. At Zaporizhstal, for example, every fourth specialist is a woman. Over the rich 90-year history of Zaporizhstal, thousands of female employees have worked here and made a significant contribution to the development of the Works. Nataliia Sheihus has been part of the Zaporizhstal family for almost 20 years. She began her career at the Finance Directorate. But later, in 2013, she started working on the shop floor - in the oxygen compressor shop, she learned the profession of a compressor unit operator. "I got a job at Zaporizhstal on the advice of my relatives and friends who worked at the plant at that time. They assured me th

Central Iron Ore Enrichment Works has completed comprehensive repairs of two grinding mills at its ore concentration plant. The scheduled upgrade of the process plant units will prevent emergency downtime and ensure continued 24/7 operation of the equipment. The revamped MShTs 4.5х6.0 and MShTs 3.6х5.0 grinding mills have already been installed and are performing their intended function - grinding ore raw materials at the initial stage of concentrate production. To increase the service life and reduce the need for frequent replacement of the trommel, it was decided to use a rubber device instead of a metal one, which makes it possible to extend the life span from eight months to 3 years. Women in Steel Industry: Story of Steelworker Yana Pleshyvenko

Zaporizhstal employs many women who, by their own example, prove that the steel industry is moving forward and developing, in particular, thanks to their work, strength, endurance, and professionalism.Yana Pleshyvenko works as a crane operator in Zaporizhstal's cold rolling shop and has been working at the plant for about 30 years. Yana met her future husband at work, and later Yana's son got a job at the plant. Yana has carried her passion and dedication to her work through her life and passed it on to the next generation of Zaporizhstal's employees."Since the start of the full-scale invasion, many of our fellow steelworkers have joined the ranks of the Ukrainian Defence Forces and are now defending our homeland or have been killed in action fighting against the occupiers. However, the enterprise has to work, the industry has to work, so that we can be a pillar for our defenders. That is why we, as women, take on even more responsibilities and approach work with enthusiasm, partly in
