From the frontlines back to work: Story of an ironclad hero from Zaporizhia

Ihor Boykov has returned to Zaporizhstal plant after his military service.Ihor Boykov has been a repairman at Zaporizhstal plant’s blast-furnace shop for 25 years, when he joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine at the onset of the full-scale war.The steelworker defended Donetsk and Zaporizhia axes as a gunner and a squad leader. During one of the combat missions he sustained a serious injury.“We came under tank attack and needed extraction. Shell fragments hit me in the leg and shoulders. The protective gear quite literally saved my life,” said Zaporizhstal worker.Ihor went through a difficult treatment and rehabilitation with the support of Zaporizhstal.Once he recovered in spring this year, he returned to his workshop to continue as a repairman and toolmaker. The defender’s family and colleagues help him adapt to civilian life.“The company has quickly provided me UAH 100,000 in aid as part of its support programme for seriously injured team members who served in the military. Kametstal upgrades switches for TPP production units

For a safer and more reliable operation of Kametstal production shops, its power engineers continue the plant’s long-term investment project aimed at upgrading the high-voltage switchgear. Specifically, the TPP electric shop is replacing 1,200 kW oil switches with a new vacuum switchgear. Last year, the substations of the power networks and stations received 37 new vacuum switches ensuring uninterrupted power supply to equipment that maintains continuous operation of blast furnaces.2024 marks a new upgrade phase of high-voltage equipment at Kametstal. TPP electric shop saw its 15 old oil switches replaced with the modern quality vacuum switchgear by Schneider. The oil switch technology, which has been a standard for decades, is now obsolete. This switchgear has flaws that affect its performance and safety. Old communication devices needed a frequent maintenance and oil replacement to stay operational. The new switches use vacuum for extinguishing the electric arc, which makes them safer

“My mission is to share knowledge about saving lives,” says Serhii Fedorchuk, Ukrainian defender, former mechanic at Metinvest’s Central GZK

Young employees at Central GZK have recently attended a first aid training session led by their colleague Serhii Fedorchuk who volunteered to hold the course during his leave. Currently, Serhii serves as a combat medic in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Before the war, Serhii was one of the most active participants of the youth movement at the plant. A dedicated enthusiast, he organised many team bike rides for GZK employees and was always involved in volunteer initiatives. Since July 2022, he has been serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, without losing his proactive spirit. During his leave, Serhii was eager to pass on the knowledge and practical skills he gained on the frontlines to his colleagues, teaching them how to render first aid in emergencies.Serhii provided the youth with a concise theoretical foundation, but most of the session was dedicated to hands-on practice. The training focused on offering first aid to those with mine and explosive injuries. Participants learned how t

100 hectares protected by rye: Central GOK uses crops for dust control

During wartime, just as in peacetime, Metinvest's Central GOK continues to implement its environmental project, a key part of which is dust suppression measures. For seven years, the company has been practising sowing rye on dry plots of tailings facilities to stabilise soil. In 2024, the total area sown with grains reached 100 hectares. Specialists from the Slurry Department of Central GOK are pleased with this year’s "harvest." The well-timed winter crop sowing and favorable weather conditions led to the highest seed germination rate. The rye sown in 2023 successfully survived the winter and sprouted in dense rows this spring. Three applications of fertilizer – during sowing, before winter, and in the spring – helped the plants establish themselves firmly on the sandy soil. So far, the rye is excellently performing its function of stabilising loose soils. Even during strong gusts of wind, the sown areas remain dust-free, as confirmed by Yevhenii Kucher, head of the Slurry Department

A new "home" for electrical equipment: a key substation is being reconstructed at Kamet Steel

New European equipment for reliable power supply of production. In July, the company began a complete overhaul of the Novodomemnna substation. This is a tie-substation that is part of Kamet Steel's "energy island." It supplies power to the blast furnace shop's production, the blast furnace cooling system, and other key equipment at the plant. The substation's long-term operation in harsh conditions, due to its proximity to the water tunnel, necessitates a complete upgrade of the equipment. Most importantly, it will be relocated to a more suitable room designed for electrical equipment. As part of the reconstruction, a new 6 kV switchgear with 12 cells will be installed in the new building. This modern, compact European-made equipment, just nine meters long, will come with nine vacuum circuit breakers that have automatic voltage detection on the cable. This cutting-edge technology prevents personnel from making errors during operational switchovers by using interlocking features, which
