Azovstal Converter Dedusting System Reconstruction Continues

The main environmental project of the year, converter dedusting system reconstruction, is being implemented at PJSC “AZOVSTAL IRON & Steel WORKS” of Metinvest Group. A number of major-scale works has been accomplished, the trestle relocation was completed and generating unit revamping continues.

Works on reconstruction of Azovstal converter dedusting system have been started in the second quarter of the current year. Reconditioning repair was done, steam transformer No. 2 was put into operation and power trestle was relocated during this time period. The technical project of a new dedusting system construction was developed by Primetals Technologies Austria GmbH, it also delivers the required equipment. The general contractor of the project is Metinvest Engineering.

The works on the generating unit are being carried out now. The generating unit performs key tasks of supplying water to cool of the dedusting system main units. The first stage of pumping equipment and air cooling unit deliveries has been completed. Heat-exchange equipment and separating units undergo final hydraulic and pneumatic testing prior to be delivered, and the delivery is scheduled for November. The equipment for dedusters is delivered on a weekly basis.

Reconditioning repair of steam transformer No. 3, evaporator, steam accumulators No.No. 4-6 and deaerators No.No. 1-2 is currently being performed at the generating unit. As far as dedusting units are concerned, excavating preparation works at the place of the former trestle to arrange groundwork for a new electric precipitator, slag bed arrangement,   reinforcement, bag filter foundation concrete pouring were started.

— Timur BOZHKO, chief foreman for Azovstal converter shop equipment repair says.

The specialists will soon proceed with reconditioning repair of steam accumulators No.No. 1-3, bag filter and electric precipitator foundation concrete casting, foundations for aspiration system gas ducts.

Let us recall that in compliance with the design, BOF gases will be purified by means of two dry dedusting units based on electric precipitators. Special covers will be installed around converters for fugitive emissions to be localized in the process of hot metal charging with their subsequent purification in the bag filter. The fugitive emissions above Azovstal converter division will be localized to the maximum.
