"I clearly see the prospects in the iron and steel industry and want to progress in Metinvest"

Philip Kharchuk is an employee of Zaporizhstal, and a furnace helper in the Open-Hearth Furnace Shop. The young man understands that to conquer new professional horizons in the future, he shall constantly progress, develop and improve his knowledge. The "Steel Metallurgy" educational program at the Steel and Mining University Metinvest Polytechnic became a powerful "knowledge-generator" for a specialist.

Philip Kharchuk

The future master of metallurgy told us about the vision of prospects in the steel industry of Ukraine and the dream of the successful reconstruction of iron and steel enterprises, in particular, Azovstal.

What was your motivation to enter a new technical university?

- I learned about Metinvest Polytechnic long ago, but later I found out about the remote learning opportunities from acquaintances. I decided to check whether it is true that the Metinvest Group supports financially with staff training. It turned out that this is fully true. The company supports its employees, and provides all opportunities for professional development in terms of education. According to the rules of the entrance campaign for the chosen teaching program, it was enough to prepare a motivation letter. Therefore, I wrote it because my motivation was already clearly defined. I collected the necessary documents and applied to the admissions committee.

You are a future master of metallurgy, and you have chosen the master's degree program "Steel Metallurgy" for your studies. What are the prospects of this particular specialization for yourself and the engineering and technical field in general?

– I see extensive prospects because this is already my second education. My first education is a process engineer in viscous materials. But since I work at an iron and steel enterprise, I believe that additional education will be helpful for further growth in  Metinvest. And one of the reasons that pushed me to study is the current situation in our country. I am sure that Ukraine will win. And when this happens, the country will need educated people who will do everything to rebuild, and make it even better and more developed. The "Steel Metallurgy" program is promising because the need for steel will increase many times after the war, and there is a belief that iron and steel enterprises will be modernized, such as Azovstal will be rebuilt. Therefore, I clearly see the prospects in the iron and steel industry and want to progress in Metinvest.

Energy terror, a difficult security situation complicate the educational process. However, despite all the challenges, studies continue along the outlined vector. Could you please tell us your difficulties and share what you like most about studying?

- No difficulties have arisen yet; the university has developed a mechanism for organizing training even under such conditions. I like all disciplines, but I can mention logistics schemes of steelmaking technologies; equipment and layout and arrangement of steelmaking shops; the latest steelmaking technologies for steel with special properties. I also like the fact that through the study of any discipline, one feels motivation and the awareness that it is not just learning, it is something more – a contribution to one's future and the future of Ukraine.

After the victory, large-scale reconstruction awaits Ukraine, so that engineers will be in great demand. Will you link your professional life with this area, Ukraine and the engineering and technological world?

- In the future, without any doubts, I see myself in the steel industry in Metinvest Group. If we look into the future, after our victory and when Azovstal will be restored, I would like to be that person with the necessary engineering and technical knowledge base who will participate in this.

- Do you have a life credo or a quote that helps and motivates you in work and study?

- In my professional life and education, I am motivated by faith in the victory and invincibility of Ukraine. Regarding the quote, I'm impressed with the following statement: "You should never stop in development; you need to learn all the time, improve your knowledge, and expand your horizons."

What advice or instructions could you give to future applicants of Metinvest Polytechnic on the eve of the new admissions campaign?

– Follow your heart while choosing a specialty to study. Whatever is closer to you in spirit, life guidelines, that is your profession.
