Education and business team up to enhance workplace safety and boost energy efficiency in manufacturing

The key topics of the meeting in Dnipro, attended by Academy DTEK and its branches, DTEK Energy, Metinvest Polytechnic, NTU "Dniprovska Polytechnic," and Lviv Polytechnic, included training personnel for the energy and industry sectors, occupational safety training, and the adoption of modern risk management standards. Business and education are collaborating to develop new programmes aimed at training skilled specialists and enhancing workplace safety.

The main outcome of the discussion was the proposal to create and implement three educational programmes and advanced training courses designed to train specialists in thermal power generation for TPP staff and maintenance companies. This was achieved through the collaboration of leading Ukrainian universities and companies, combining their expertise, educational resources, cutting-edge technologies, and practical experience.

The participants focused particularly on occupational safety issues. They discussed the possibility of DTEK employees receiving training from Metinvest Polytechnic instructors in TOP-risk trainings, including Risk-Based Approach to Working at Height and Risk-Based Approach to Working with Electrical Equipment. These programmes are designed to minimise industrial risks, enhance employee awareness, and foster a strong safety culture.

As the first university in Ukraine to join the international Vision Zero programme, Metinvest Polytechnic shared its experience in training specialists for the industry. The university provides training in seven key areas, including working with electrical equipment, operating lifting and moving mechanisms, working at height, assessing the risks of falling objects, implementing the LOTO system, and ensuring the safe movement of rail transport.

Modern approaches to professional training were also explored, including the integration of advanced risk assessment methods, engagement with certified expert practitioners, and the analysis of real-life cases. Training programmes will incorporate practical skills development and the adoption of leading global safety practices.

The participants reaffirmed their mutual commitment to strengthening partnerships between education and industry. Bringing together the expertise of universities and industrial companies will not only enhance occupational safety but also ensure the effective training of specialists for the energy and industrial sectors. The next step will be to develop specific educational programmes and establish mechanisms for their implementation.
