Metinvest has donated UAH140 million to support Ukrainian medical institutions

During the full-scale war in Ukraine, the medical community works around the clock on the front lines and in the rear. To save more lives, Metinvest Group provides consistent support for medical institutions.

Since 24 February, the workload of Ukrainian medical workers has doubled. In addition to the civilians who need their help, wounded military personnel are also being evacuated from the front lines. Since the outbreak of the war, Metinvest has established cooperation with Ukrainian hospitals, to which it regularly delivers humanitarian cargoes.

More than UAH140 million in aid has been provided to medical workers

For defenders and civilians

As a matter of priority, under a separate programme that is being implemented together with the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation, Metinvest has arranged the supply of medicines, consumables and equipment to cities where it operates: Zaporizhzhia, Kryvyi Rih, Kamianske, Pokrovsk and Avdiivka. The list of necessary goods is defined directly by medical workers, so hospitals receive medical cargoes that are in urgent need. In particular, medical institutions of Kamianske have received more than 9,000 units of medicine: antibiotics, infusion solutions, plasma substitutes, antishock drugs and surgical plasters. The city also received two modern surgical tables with the necessary accessories at a total cost of almost UAH4.5 million.

“It is very important that medicines, consumables and equipment arrive constantly, because every day we use medicines, intravenous systems, gloves and syringes to treat patients. This allows us to provide timely medical care and get wounded Ukrainian soldiers and civilians back on their feet as quickly as possible,” Rostislav VINAR, Chief Medical Officer of the Kamianske City Emergency Hospital, said.

The Zaporizhzhia military hospital, to which wounded and critically ill defenders are brought from the front lines, is receiving strong support at a very difficult time for Ukrainians. Zaporizhstal has already donated expensive medical equipment for the surgical department and medications several times. During the latest of these deliveries, the hospital received about 18,000 units of medicine at a total cost of over UAH525,000. Some of them are used during operations, although most of them are medicines for therapeutic treatment and postoperative rehabilitation.

The system works well enough. We receive requests from doctors: what is needed and in what quantity. If drugs are imported, Metinvest buys them abroad. If we can find medications of proper quality here, we buy them in Ukraine.

Future consignments will also be formed based on actual requests from medical institutions.

We value every life

In addition, Ukrainian medical workers receive assistance under the Saving Lives humanitarian project, which is implemented by Metinvest in coordination with the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation. With the support of donor companies from around the world, Ukrainian hospitals have already received humanitarian cargoes with a total value of around EUR24,000. This will enable medical workers to help more than 70,000 people.

For example, hospitals in Kryvyi Rih, where defenders are recovering from wounds, have already received humanitarian support worth more than UAH46 million from Metinvest and the Saving Lives project. This includes painkillers, anti-inflammatories, antibacterial and styptic agents, infusion solutions, and nootropic drugs for recovery of brain activity after wounds and contusions. In addition, sets of sterile clothing, bandages, surgical plasters, cannulas, catheters, probes and endotracheal tubes have also been supplied.

“For the normal functioning of medical institutions, regardless of their profile, the timely supply of medicines and medical devices is vital. This is an area that now needs stable financing like never before, not only from state and city budgets, but also from business donations. Metinvest’s support means that doctors in Kryvyi Rih can now provide quality treatment to a great number of our defenders and affected civilians,” Konstantin MURASHKO, Head of the Health Protection Department in Kryvyi Rih, noted.

As part of the Saving Lives project, modern equipment is also being delivered to cities where Metinvest’s enterprises are located. In particular, an expert-class anaesthesia and respiratory machine has been delivered to the Kryvyi Rih City Clinical Hospital. One more medical institution in Kryvyi Rih, which functions as a hospital, has received equipment to treat patients with shrapnel wounds and various other injuries.

In addition, the emergency hospital in Kamianske has received a universal electrosurgical unit and a mobile digital X-ray unit, which will improve the quality of services provided to patients.

Safeguarding health

Metinvest is also focused on other aspects of support for Ukraine’s medical front. In summer, the Group handed over 20 specialised ambulance vehicles to the military medical workers of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine. The vehicles went to the front line to assist in the evacuation of wounded defenders from the field or from an aid station to a hospital.

FACT

In addition to Metinvest, the Vadym Novynskyi Charitable Foundation provides ambulances for Ukraine. To date, hospitals have received 101 ambulances.

To ensure uninterrupted power supply at the Kryvyi Rih hospital No. 17, two diesel generators have been purchased and installed. Metinvest allocated UAH3 million for this project. Earlier, the Group installed standby power supply systems at two Zaporizhzhia hospitals. Uninterrupted power supply to critically important medical facilities is the key to keeping people alive.

One urgent patient need that Metinvest continues to provide, even during wartime conditions, is medical oxygen for the treatment of coronavirus patients. Zaporizhstal is currently the main oxygen supplier among the Group’s enterprises. Overall, Metinvest’s metallurgical enterprises have shipped about 1,300 tonnes of oxygen to Ukrainian hospitals since the beginning of 2022.

In wartime conditions, it is no less important to maintain mental health. For this purpose, the unique Metinvest Together! psychological service helps the Group’s employees and their family members. As a measure of its success, after nearly 1,500 individual and group consultations, employees have offered much positive feedback.
