Kamet Steel has completed a major overhaul of Boiler No. 6 in the boiler shop of the steelworks' combined heat and power plant, ensuring its reliable operation for consistent steam supply to the plant.
Medium-pressure boiler unit No. 6, with a nameplate capacity of 90 tonnes of steam per hour, produces steam for Kamet Steel's production needs.
The main focus of the overhaul was on restoring worn-out components, whose gradual failure had led to a decline in the unit's efficiency. To begin with, all metal heating surfaces of the boiler – such as water tubes, headers of the platen and convective superheaters, burner, and air heater – were replaced. The induced draft systems, shut-off valves, gas ducts, and chimney underwent repairs, and the boiler water supply lines were replaced.
To enhance safety and working conditions for boiler maintenance personnel, the reinforced concrete floor in the ID fan room was repaired.
Two new fifteen-inch screens were also installed on the control panel, showing all boiler operating parameters, including those not previously visible on smaller screens. The operator can now monitor air flow, pressure, steam temperature, and other parameters online, enabling more efficient management of the unit's start-up and operation. An oxygen analyser was also installed in the tail section, assisting the operator in adjusting the relevant parameters.
Commissioning activities for Boiler Unit No. 6 began at the end of February.
"During the overhaul of Boiler No. 6, we implemented design solutions aimed at operational improvements. Specifically, we redirected the supply of natural gas to the upper burner, which helps bring the boiler’s steam output to its nominal level, while also improving the reliability and extending the lifespan of the unit’s components – ultimately increasing the period between repairs. Overall, the overhaul is expected to reduce specific fuel consumption by fully utilising the heating surfaces and eliminating unproductive losses of heated air in the upgraded air heater," says Oleksandr STAROVOITOV, head of the power plant's boiler shop.
