Zaporizhstal has launched a pilot project to equip overhead cranes with pre-operation automatic signalling systems. The first two cranes in the railway transport management department are now outfitted with both sound and light signals.
The system works quite simply: light and sound beacons on the cranes alert employees of the machine activation. The crane won’t start unless these signals are on. In addition to intermittent sound signals, the high-risk zone beneath and around the crane will be continuously illuminated in red.
FACTS AND FIGURES
Zaporizhstal allocated UAH 1.2 million for the pilot project
Installing the signalling system on a single crane takes two days. To ensure uninterrupted production, the project was implemented gradually, in line with the cranes’ work schedules and operational loads.
“Operating cranes inherently carries significant risks, and our priority is to minimise these risks to safeguard the health and lives of Zaporizhstal employees. The automatic alarm system is already in use at the railway transport management depot and has proven its effectiveness. We’re going to equip more cranes with this system in the future,” said Oleksii BOICHENKO, head of the Industrial Safety Department.
