Zaporizhstal Masters New Products

Zaporizhstal specialists have mastered the production of cold-rolled coils that are double the standard weight without a weld. The first lot of new coils has been shipped for the construction sector.

This year, Zaporizhstal has started producing its first new type of products: cold-rolled coils with a size of 1.5-2.0 х 1,370-1,500 millimetres that are double the standard weight without a weld. The enterprise has already shipped 3,600 tonnes of these new coils for the construction sector. Zaporizhstal employees note that even in such tough times аs these, they are ready to develop and support the economy of Ukraine.

“We received a request from potential customers in Europe. They wanted coils pertaining to the fourth type of rolled steel with a width of 1,500 millimetres, yet with a coil weight of at least 9 tonnes. While we have produced such products before, the technology needed to be revised. Therefore, we almost immediately set to work mastering a new type of rolled product. Together with our colleagues from the hot-rolling mill and the quality control department, we rapidly developed the new technology: just 14 days passed between the customer request and the trial lot production,” said Sergiy Kuzmenko, the deputy cold-rolling shop manager responsible for production

Previously, Zaporizhstal produced coils with a weight of up to 8 tonnes and a thickness of up to 3.8 millimetres. To produce such coils, it welded two light coils on the cold-rolling shop’s BTA-4 line, as a result of which the coils had welds. The production approach has now changed. The new coils are produced in the hot-rolling shop and their thickness is changed in the cold-rolling shop. The revised approach made it possible to master the new production while also achieving significant savings.

When we commissioned this production technology, the savings from the implementation of such products totalled more than UAH1.1 million thanks to the change in thickness. We roll such coils on our lines. We no longer weld them from two pieces of one ingot as before, thus avoiding the cut in the centre of the coil.

In addition, the productivity of the pickling line and the rolling mill has increased. Packaging heavy coils with a weight of up to 16 tonnes instead of light coils of up to 8 tonnes also nearly halves the consumption of packing materials.
