In Zaporizhia, veterans continue to take free swimming sessions as part of the Free Waves programme.
Swimming is one of the best means of rehabilitation after injuries and wounds. While loading the entire body uniformly rather than locally like in other types of training, swimming engages all muscle groups – even under light loads, they warm up, become stronger and more enduring.
Veterans participating in Free Waves rehabilitation programme have already experienced the benefits of swimming, as they attend the free sessions at the pool.
This programme was initiated over a month ago by Denys Sylantiev, a professional swimmer and public activist from Zaporizhia. Financial support for the Free Waves project in Zaporizhia is provided by Metinvest in coordination with Zaporizhstal plant and Zaporizhia. Joint Action Platform CSO.
The sessions for military personnel and veterans are conducted by Honoured Coach of Ukraine in swimming Serhiy Pronyayev, using adaptive techniques developed by Denys Sylantiev.
"The programme is designed for people with injuries of varying severity, illnesses, and those undergoing rehabilitation. The sessions help our veterans relax, improve their physical condition, and, in my observations, they genuinely feel better," says Serhiy PRONYAYEV.
Oleksandr, a native of Zaporizhia, joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 2022 to defend his homeland. He served on the Zaporizhia front but was discharged due to deteriorating health. He is currently completing rehabilitation at the pool as part of the Free Waves project and is already feeling the benefits of these sessions.
"Due to my illness, doctors prohibited intense physical exercises, but swimming is the perfect option in this case. There are no complex physical loads, we simply swim and dive under the supervision of our coach. I am already noticing improvements in my stamina and mental health. This project should involve as many defenders as possible, because these sessions are truly helpful. Swimming heals both the body and the mind," Oleksandr shares.
Veterans and servicemen from Zaporizhia have the opportunity to join the project. All sessions are free. To learn more and sign up, please call 073 444 19 27.
