Ukraine's economic recovery as proposed by Mariupol Reborn discussed in Poland

Warsaw hosted a workshop to discuss Ukraine's economic recovery as proposed by Mariupol Reborn. The major topics included the post-war restoration of the city, creation of jobs, identifying industries where people can be employed, and assuring the integrity of communities that would be ready to return to the liberated territories.

One of the key Mariupol Reborn projects is the development of an economic model for the city. Three working groups were created at the workshop to cover manufacturing & industry; transport, logistics & port development, and a knowledge hub responsible for science and innovations.

Each group consisted of about 10 experts. Discussions were focused on the development of all three areas, the influencing factors, and the potential projects. At the end of the workshop, the results of the discussions were put down as recommendations to be used for the development of Mariupol's economic model.

The Mariupol Reborn project is implemented by the Mariupol City Council with the investment support of Rinat Akhmetov's SCM.

“We've held 15 meetings with the people of Mariupol to discuss the city recovery. Their major concern is housing, safety and well-paid jobs. This is why we are designing an economic vision for Mariupol. The vision will help answer the questions as to where and which jobs the people of Mariupol can do. We plan to dedicate the year of 2024 to preparing for the recovery of our city. Together with the partners and the community, we will focus on developing the Mariupol Reborn plan. We believe in it, and it is the starting point where which the great and challenging path of Mariupol's restoration begins, said the Mariupol mayor Vadym BOYCHENKO.

Develop an expert-level economic vision with the involvement of experience and international support. Create the first unique case of post-war economic recovery of a destroyed city. In the long term, return economically active population and young people to the city. These are the tasks set by the Mariupol City Council, the Mariupol Reborn project team and their partners.

Rinat Akhmetov's businesses have always been among the largest taxpayers in Ukraine. Companies that are part of Metinvest and SCM holdings have played a crucial role in the economy of Mariupol. In terms of numbers, over the past 10 years, they have invested around UAH 1 billion in the city. This included rebuilding houses, schools and social infrastructure after the destructive shelling by russians in 2014. We will continue to do so after the de-occupation of Mariupol. Metinvest and SCM are regular partners of the Mariupol Reborn project. We see the revived city's economy as green and diversified. This will bring back Mariupol's glory of an economic giant. This will mean jobs and a decent standard of living for the city residents in the first place,” commented Oleksandr VYSHNIAKOV, Director of NGO “Mariupol.Reborn”.
